Defoamers
Defoamers destroys the formation of foam and its adverse effects before and during the coating. Polydimethylsiloxanes, insoluble oils, some types of alcohols, stearates and glycols are few agents used as defoamers. If a foam is formed, it will damage the coating by failing to fill the containers properly. Defoamers eliminate the possibility of product losses from a container with overflowing liquid. Also, pumping and mixing become easier by using defoamer. Water does not form a foam. Once surfactants and other surface-active chemicals are added into the water, air is trapped to produce foam. The thick consistency of the defoamers makes it blend faster on the foamy surface. Defoamers are used in paint, paper, wood pulp, food processing and many more. It is also used in pharmaceutical industry to reduce bloating.
Types of Defoamers
Silicone Based Defoamer
Silicone-based defoamers are available in the form of oil or a water-based emulsion. Hydrophobic silica is the main raw material used in Silicon-based defoamer. Silica does not combine with water. Hence, it does not produce foam. Emulsifiers are used to spread it rapidly on the surface.
Oil Based Defoamers
It basically contains oil. It does not mix with water so it is the best defoamer. It is insoluble in water and other liquids. Fatty alcohol waxes, paraffinic waxes, and ester waxes are used in these defoamers. The wax present further improves the efficiency of the defoamer.
Water Based Defoamers
Water-based defoamers are a combination of the oil and waxes in a water base. The oils used are a vegetable oil or mineral oils and the wax used are fatty acid soaps, long chain fatty alcohol, or esters. Water-based defoamers are used in the wastewater treatment and paper manufacturing processes.
EO/PO Based Defoamers
EO/PO based defoamers is a mixture of polyethylene glycol and polypropylene glycol copolymers. They are supplied as oils, liquid solutions, or water-based emulsions. These copolymers disperse well which makes it suitable when there is a deposit problem.
